FUNDAMENTALS IN CLAY
(5 days of clay, 2 days of glaze)
THROWING ON THE POTTERY WHEEL (Level 1)

This course is designed for adult pottery beginners, as well as more experienced potters wishing to improve their abilities (intermediate throwers can expect to be offered some extra challenges).

M-F 9am-12pm, participants will be guided through a sequence of lessons proven to build a strong foundation for a wheel throwing practice. Expect clear instruction, demonstrations, repetition, and hands-on assistance to achieve pottery goals.

M-F 12pm-5pm, will be open studio time to practice the morning’s lesson independently.

In the final +2-day session, we will return to glaze the bisque-fired pots, including comprehensive demonstrations and assistance.  High-fired (finished) works will be available for pick up the following week.

This is first and foremost a skill-building course, a pottery boot camp—but design aesthetics and discovering one’s own “potter’s touch” will also be explored. Our skilled in-house instructors will shepherd students through centering, forming and shaping, all the way to trimming, attaching handles, and finally glazing. Emphasis will be on making as many pots as possible to develop fluency and muscle-memory, and then “curating” the best quality pots for firing at the end of the week.

Cost: USD $700 includes:

  • five mornings of throwing tuition

  • one day of glaze instruction

  • access to studio, tools, and equipment 9am-5pm for the seven class days

  • technical assistance throughout

  • studio stoneware clay

*All pieces elected by the participant to be fired will be weighed on Friday of the Clay instruction week, and fee is calculated at the usual rate of Rp120/g
