FUNDAMENTALS IN CLAY (5 days Instruction +2)
HANDBUILDING
(Level 1)
This course is designed for those interested in the world of making in clay off the wheel. As a preliminary look into hand building techniques, the week will cover the basic of slab work, coil building, pinch pots, hollowing solid forms, and their possible combination. These techniques are foundational for making utilitarian as well as sculptural objects so, once mastered, the possibilities for creative expression are endless.
M-F 9am-12pm, participants will be guided through a sequence of techniques as a foundation for the limitless possibilities of hand building. Expect clear instruction, demonstrations and hands-on assistance to achieve your goals.
M-F 12pm-5pm, every day will be open studio time to practice the morning’s lesson independently.
In the final +2-day session, we will return for two days to glaze the bisque-fired wares, including a comprehensive glaze demonstration and assistance. High-fired (finished) works will be available for pick up on Monday of the following week.
This week will introduce the main categories of approach when working with hands only in clay. Each hand building technique could easily encompass its own week-long course (or more!), thus this is predictably going to serve as a taster of many approaches, rather than a deep exploration of any single one.
Eva will offer demonstrations, examples of how a simple technique can grow in complexity, and plenty of hands-on assistance. Emphasis will be on finalizing a single piece in each technique for firing at the end of the week.
Cost: USD $700 includes:
five mornings of handbuilding tuition
access to studio, tools, and equipment 9am-5pm for the seven class days
one day of glazing instruction
technical assistance throughout
studio stoneware clay
*All pieces elected by the participant to be fired are calculated at the usual rate of Rp120/g
